Who didn't know Jigoku Shoujo? Aside from the story line, I think what made the anime version get attention was the music score. There was a sorrow, pain, yet also horror in many part of the scores, worked by Yasuharu Takanashi. And who didn't know this score? I should said this was one of the signature sound from Jigoku Shoujo. I think, it was hard to forget him. He worked on all Jigoku Shoujo series, Naruto Shippuuden, Genji ~Dawn of Samurai~ (games), and probably Fairy Tail was the most "not Yasuharu's style' I could recall. I should called him dark-emotion-master. :) Well, from any composer I had known, his works were the darkest I'd would easily notice. So Yasuharu-san is our featured composer for our Halloween theme! Yasuharu's style was basically not hard to play. He usually use easy notes and easy chords. Whenever it goes for 'sorrow' and 'dark-sad-horror' theme, he usually used minimalist sound, if not, he would combined traditional instrument with Western orchestra. Kumo to Rouba to Shoujo was a sample from his signature style. You could heard the erhu's sound, combined with harp and strings, a little touch of woodwinds section, and strengthen with human's voice. And that was all. And the result? You still enjoy it, don't you? Basically, a horror-yet-sad-and-painful formula that he used was pretty simple. Aside from notes, that I already mentioned above, the use of chords played main role in his works. For example, in this score, Bar 1 to bar 20 had mainly minor chords (Em and Bm). But then the balance of major chords and minor chords came on bar 21 to bar 28. This was more like a transition to next part, where the major chords were dominating it (chord D, G, and C as major chords, while minor only Em). Then the first  part was repeated with a short outroduction to close the music which of course dominating with minor chords again. Overall, the music is not complicated but need skills to perform. Especially for erhu, vocal, and banjo (More likely a sound of banjo rather than violin). Performing totally as solo is not a problem, especially piano. For violin or strings, there's possibility for Beginners to perform. For emotion training and sharpening skills, Beginner-Intermediate to Intermediate students can use this music both to study and performing. The 'review' about Yasuharu-san would be continued next time, with another anime that I had never transcribed before. Can you guess? Happy horror-sadness! E N J OY!
