So I just got Ghost in the Shell Solid State Society. Is it necessary to watch the previous two movies to understand this one? Because I haven't seen them yet.

No, it's not necessary to have seen the two previous movies.  However, a possible requirement would be to have watched the GITS Stand Alone Complex 1st GIG and 2nd GIG TV series, especially the 2nd one.  That way you can have some background material.  But if you don't have the time, you can always look up wikipedia for more info hehehe.

As for me, I started my love affair with GITS with SAC 1st GIG, and saw the two previous movies afterwards.  It doesn't really matter which one you see first, I think, because the two early movies and the SAC series are worlds apart. I mean SAC was supposed to be another alternate reality GITS.  At least that's what I understand.

LOL, sorry if it sounded confusing Hung.

What I meant was:

- You don't need to see the two previous movies to understand Solid State Society.

- On the other hand, you might need to watch the GITS Stand Alone Complex series, the 1st GIG and its sequel the 2nd GIG, for background info.

What's a GIG? I think that's what's confusing me.

Actually I have no firm idea what GIG means too.  All I know is that the first TV series (or you could say the first season) of GITS SAC is commonly referred to as the 1st GIG, and the sequel (second season) is formally known as the 2nd GIG.

I actually think that's handy too, rather than saying "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG" in full, you can just refer to it as 2nd GIG.

But if there's anybody who knows what GIG really stands for, I'd be glad to be enlightened about that too =)

GIG is just some pretentious computer-type word to make it seem all technological and fancy. I'm not sure if it means anything more than 'gig' as in gigabyte. I could be entirely wrong, however...

I thought it was vaguely meant in the musical sense, like season one is their first 'gig' or performance, and then season two is the second one.

Hung, all you need to know is that "GIG" is a fancy way of saying "season"- and I'd agree that it would be a good idea to watch both TV series before Solid State Society just so you know who the characters are and how they got to where they did.

It's just like "School Rumble, 2nd Term"
