Depends on what genres you like, I guess.

Yotsuba& is awesome. It's slice of lifeish. It's by the same author who did Azumanga, and obviously I like it (it's my forum avatar).

Keroro Gunso is cool. Wacky and weird.

School Rumble is awesome. If you like the anime, go with the manga.

Death Note is a good psychological cat and mouse chase. I got this one recently and it's really good.

I'm just working off the few manga I've bought and know about. So far, I haven't really bought a manga I didn't like...

If you really wanna play it safe, you could just take note of your favourite anime series and there's probably a high chance that it was originally done in manga form (if you're willing to search them out).

Might seem weird since you already know the plot, but the probability of the artwork and story being of higher quality and more detail is usually a good bet (okay I don't really have the experience to make such a large claim first hand, but that's what I seem to hear). Especially if the anime forced a conclusion to make the episode count.

It depends on your age and taste. I started with Doraemon but I doubt anyone would now. I stepped into teenhood with Flame of Recca and Kenshin. I moved into late teens with Gantz, Genshiken and Berserk.

If you don't mind blood 'n' guts, Tsukihime is a really good series to start off.

Negima. Period. Get it for the art.

One Piece is fine too, even if it's Shounen.

Other recommendations would be Hayate the Combat Butlet, Pastel, Mushishi, NHK.

Mmm, specific preference is important before I could give you definite recommendations, but series like Naruto, the aforementioned Death Note, pretty much anything by CLAMP (xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa being their big two at the moment, both great in their own ways) are all great starts.

I'm a Delrey fanboy and generally swear by most of their series. They're all great quality. If you fancy hard-hitting, mature thriller type stuff, go for Monster. Brilliant brilliant stuff.

I am a Yuu Watase fanboy, and I highly recommend Ayashi no Ceres. Screw the story, it's all about TEH ART.

It is time to say something manly to seem veteranly cool and wise.

Follow your heart. Manga is forever.

I strongly recommend Death Note. The plot is mind blowing it draws you in and you'll just spend hours reading without realizing that 6 hours has passed (that's if you marathon the manga).

And then grab Genshiken. It's your otaku bible. XD

Love Hina and Negima! Okay, I love Akamatsu. XD But, they're really good reads.

And like Tsubaki says, Genshiken is great. I'm only just reading it, though. Poor me.

Really, I think any not-so-long manga series would work (as long as it is not a bad series.)
