Anime Vice: noitaminA Block Stretches to One Hour

I've talked about noitaminA enough that I think most of you are familiar with the concept: it's FujiTV's highly-respected 12:45am to 1:15am Friday morning timeslot, known for its strong anime titles such as Honey and Clover, Nodame Cantabile, Toshokan Sensou, Eden of the East, etc etc. There have been a lot of changes at noitaminA lately, including its first live-action series-- a live-action version of Moyashimon, which it previously aired the anime adaptation of --but now word at Comic Natalie is that starting in April, the timeslot will become one hour long, featuring two shows. This may explain why they already have four pending titles for 2010 with only three seasons left! This April, Noitamina will begin airing both the Masaaki Yuasa series Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei-- which many of you may remember from yesterday's trailer --and Saraiya Goyou, aka House of Five Leaves, an anime based on the manga by Natsume Ono (of Ristorante Paradiso and Not Simple fame), for which a trailer just hit yesterday. I, for one, think that this is really cool. With one notable exception-- 2006's Jyu-Oh-Sei, a poorly-paced adaptation of an otherwise spiffy shoujo sci-fi series --everything on the list of Noitamina series has always had a pretty strong reputation, and/or was something I absolutely fell in love with. A little more of that can only be a good thing. (You can catch a full list of said Noitamina series on our wiki page for the slot.)So, now that you've seen both Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei and House of Five Leaves' trailers, are you interested either? Or both?

Anime Vice: Alter Starts New Line of Figures for Women

Just caught another interesting piece of news via Twitter: ClarisseG reports that Alter has started a new line of figures called Altair, which will be figures aimed at women, a relatively unusual demographic in a world of cute anime girl figures. They promise that the female-targeted brand will feature "high quality, painted" figures, and acknowledge that it's a pretty broad aim at the moment, but they hope that we'll dig their "cool figures." Note that the word they use for "cool" here, kakkoii, is something I usually translate as "Cool with a capital C"-- a sort of more badass cool. (Boddington and I have been discussing how exactly to explain the difference between "kakkoii" and "cool" and have agreed that it's really hard to pin down.) Something better than this... Anyway! They haven't announced any of their lineup just yet, as they're still thinking about it, but that while developing the line they "had the feeling, 'I want to make a figure that a woman would want to buy.'"So, Dear Altair: I'd like to see a really good non-Nendoroid L, Kamina is hopefully a gimme, and I wouldn't mind Itoshiki-sensei from Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei and Akira from Eden of the East. Mmm.Now it's your turn, ladies AND gents-- what male figures do you guys want? I expect to see some serious lists in the comments!

Anime Vice: Summer Wars Wins the Day at the Tokyo Anime Awards

Like the Eisners at Comic-Con International, so are the Tokyo Anime Awards at Tokyo Anime Fair, except that TAF's awards are much younger (Eisners: 22 years, TAAs: 9 years). Unfortunately for you guys, none of this year's winners are generally available in North America...yet. I can pretty much guarantee all of them will be! Summer Wars: Best Director, Best Original Story, Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Character Design, Best Feature Film, and Animation of the Year. Best Director, Best Original Story, Best Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Character Design, and the biggie, Animation of the Year, all went to one title: Mamoru Hosoda's Summer Wars. I don't know how he managed to not only meet but beat expectations after his phenomenal work on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, but I can't wait to see it. Fun fact: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time also won all of the aforementioned categories in 2007. But there's one award that Summer Wars nabbed that Girl did not: Best Feature Film. (Girl was beaten out by Paprika and Arashi ni Yoru ni in this category.) Having thus surpassed its predecessor, all I can say is: congrats, Hosoda-sensei, now bring the freakin' movie to San Francisco already. Eden of the East K-On! Moving along, this year's Best TV Anime were Production I.G's Eden of the East and Kyoto Animation's K-On!, the Best OVA was Eve no Jikan/Time of Eve, and the Best Foreign Animation went to Wall-E. (Yay!) Hiroshi Kamiya won Best Voice Actor for his work in Bakemonogatari as our hero, Araragi-kun-- you can hear him now as info broker Izaya in Durarara!! over on Crunchyroll. And finally, Evangelion 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance took home the Best Music award. Also of note: Fumiko no Kokuhaku, the hilarious YouTube short which you may remember, was among the Award of Excellence for a Student winners. Awesome! What do you think? Did you see any series in the last year that you thought should be here, too?

Yamaki's Anime Blog: Yamaki's Anime Blog: Kristalyamaki's 2010 Resolution

Right now I feel like I'm at a wrong place, doing a wrong thing at a wrong time: Right now it's already February, the second month of a year, and here I am, trying to write an article about my resolutions of the year. I am sure some of you would think, "Hey, if you had wanted to post your resolutions of a year, shouldn't you do that at the start of the year like most people do?". Well, I have a reasonable excuse: I was busy with application the for college at the end of the year 2009 while in January at the start of the year 2010 I was busy settling down at a whole new environment here in Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia. As you can see, my life had changed 180 degree - I'm now a college student who is trying to earn his degree. (pardon the pun) :DAs I have did in my previous yearly resolutions, I would now hand down a verdict for the resolution I had given myself last year... no wait, I made no resolutions last year. >_>;;In that case, I'll just review the resolution I had made for the year 2008... and see whether I had managed to complete them within the past two years.Resolution #1: Attend HobbyConI attended Hobbycon last year, and even though I was only there for less than 2 hours, but I guess it's still a pass. :DVerdict: PASSResolution #2: Cosplay an anime characterI actually did some research online on the costumes but in the end I didn't order any of them. Therefore in the end, I didn't cosplay.(but for once I was glad I didn't. Reading all those blogs of those cosplayers in cure makes me think: who am I to cosplay? >_<;)Verdict: FAILResolution #3: Continue to watch animes even on tight schedulesEven though I had a really long hiatus from anime blogging here in YAB, I have been watching quite a few series, and among them are Hayate no Gotoku, H20 -footprints in the sand-, ef -memories-, ef -melodies-, Lucky Star, NHK ni Youkoso, Eden of the East, Hatsukoi Limited, Clannad After Story and Serial Experiment Lain.Verdict: PASSResolution #4: Create at least one anime music video WITHOUT using Windows Movie MakerI didn't even get to make one...Verdict: FAILResolution #5: Get Yamaki's Anime Blog out of livejournalI was too lazy to get myself an account...Right now I feel like I'm at a wrong place, doing a wrong thing at a wrong time: Right now it's already February, the second month of a year, and here I am, trying to write an article about my resolutions of the year. The price would almost be the same.Okay, now on to my resolutions for the year 2010:Resolution #1: Attend Comic FiestaI'm now here in Kuala Lumpur. I've listened to all that have been said about CF on the internet. Since I'm in town, I might as well go have a look myself to see how a real gathering of anime/manga fans would be like.Resolution #2: To watch at least 12 new series by the end of the yearThat makes it a series a month. Hmmm. That's going to be hard, considering the fact that I have to download them through direct download - the wifi here at the place where I stay seem to block all torrents from working.Resolution #3: Pass all subjects this yearAs long as I pass all subject in college I'll be safe from any trouble.Resolution #4: Save lots of moneyThe other day I had bought two tokens for a gachapon over at a stall at Mid-Valley (from which I got a Mikuru keychain), even though I am on a really tight budget. Here's what I am going to do: save money every month. By the end of the month I'll have some money left, and if so, I can spend it on some anime stuffs. You know the other day I was in Borders I saw the "Welcome to the NHK novel" and I had wanted to buy it......Resolution #5: Finish at least 3 visual vovels by the end of the yearThis seems pretty simple to achieve... all I have to do is to make the right choice and read. XDThat's it for now. Lastly, although it's already February, Yamaki's Anime Blog would like to wish all its readers a happy new year. Oh and, 'Gong Xi fa Cai' to those who celebrate Chinese New Year too. May we have a prosperous year ahead... for being an otaku is not a cheap hobby.
