Back in late December, word came out that Gackt would be playing himself in a little anime omake in the OVA adaptation of the 4koma manga strip Tono to Issho. The bit would be call Gackt mo Issho and is a play on Gackt's previous role as historical warlord Uesugi Kenshin. But now it turns out that Gackt is going to have another voice role-- and not as himself. He'll play a character named Seishirou Kirishiki in the new anime series Shiki, based on Twelve Kingdoms author Fuyumi Ono's novel series. The series revolves around an isolated village in Japan which buries its dead, rather than cremating them as is more customary in Japan, where villagers suddenly begin dying one by one. I'm not usually much for this kind of thing, but I love Ono's other horror series Ghost Hunt, so I'm really looking forward to this one. I'm guessing Higurashi fans might as well. Of course, it's not like even these are Gackt's first voice roles; he played the baddie in the Japanese dub of Arthur and the Invisibles, and of course there's an entire Gackt-based Vocaloid singer. And he even played Genesis Rhapsodos in Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus.  Still and all, it'll be interesting to hear him in a full-fledged anime role. What do you guys think?  Ghost Hunt Many of you are aware that I am a huge huge fan of Ghost Hunt, the anime adaptation of Fuyumi Ono's popular novel series of the same name. More people may be familiar with Ono as the author of the Twelve Kingdoms novel series and its subsequent anime adaptation, although the fantasy drama stands out amongst Ono's primarily horror works in Japan. The latest anime adaptation of Ono's works is Shiki (or Corpse Demon). It's the first novel she published after a four-year break from writing two Ghost Hunt spinoff novels, in 1998. The horror mystery anime is set in the a village called Gaiba (not sure I have the kanji right on this one), a small town with a population of 1,300 people. The village, isolated from the rest of the nation, has an unusual custom for Japan: burial of dead bodies, rather than cremation. One day during a hot summer, three corpses are found and the local doctor can't figure out their cause of death. Shortly after their appearance, villagers begin to die, one by one by one. "Is it a strange coincidence? A plague? Or..." and there the official Japanese site leaves off.It may sound a bit Higurashi-like, but bear in mind that the novel cameout four years prior to Higurashi's first game, and of course neither is the pioneer of the horror mystery in which characters are picked off one at a time. But it sounds pretty interesting-- what do you think?

Shiki, a horror mystery manga by Ono Fuyumi and Fujisaki Ryuu, centers around an isolated mountain village, whose inhabitants start dying because of strange reasons. Later, the cause is unveiled; it's vampires.The creator Ono Fuyumi is known for writing the novels Ghost Hunt and The Twelve Kingdoms. The other one, Fujisaki Ryuu, has drawn Soul Hunter manga.It's unknown when it will get on the TV screens. But I'm definitely looking forward to it. The character on the official site reminds me of Frederica Bernkastel from Umineko, as well as the plot. A cut-off island and people are falling mysteriously. Again, the isolated village reminds me of Hinamizawa in Higurashi.

  Vital Statistics: Title: Night Head Genesis Story: George Iida Script & Art: You Higuri Original Publisher: Kodansha Genre : Sci-Fi/Supernatural, Drama Release Info: Release Date: 11/24/09 US Publisher: Del Rey Manga Translator: Alethea and Athena Nibley Length: 208 pages MSRP: $10.99 Rating: Older Teen (16+)  The Story  Night Head Genesis: The Anime  Night Head: the J-Drama Naoto and Naoya are brothers whose parents shipped them off to a research facility where they would be cared for until their adulthood. Naoya can see peoples' thoughts when he touches them, and Naoto has a bad habit of getting angry and causing things to smash, explode, or bleed. You can imagine why their folks kicked them out-- more destructive than a puppy! After the death of "old man Misaki," whose spiritual powers kept the boys bound to the facility, the twosome head out into the real world, where they're quickly swept up into trying to save the world from a disaster predicted by a man who sees visions of the future. Night Head Genesis is a manga based on an anime that was based on a live-action television drama called Night Head. The Review  Cantarella I love You Higuri's art. She's better known for her historical drama Cantarella (about the insidious Borgia clan) and her yaoi titles, such as Gorgeous Carat and Gakuen Heaven. I remember being surprised when she did character designs for Night Head Genesis, a seinen supernatural drama, when she's so much more well-known for shoujo and yaoi works. But the art is beautiful and I can't fault it here. Higuri also has a good balance between detailed and less-detailed backgrounds, packing the panels with story and information without overloading them. ...Unfortunately, there's story to deal with. Bishounen fans will probably find something to like between Naoya's meek sweetness and Naoto's constant righteous anger, but I find them both rather whiny. The story's pacing is a little off: the boys are born, kicked out by their parents, kept at the facility, then grown and gone from it within the first chapter. They mysteriously have enough money for a nice apartment, clothes, food, and everything else that they need, as well as a woman on their heels who wants to kill them because she thinks they're the key to the world's destruction. The story is so fast-paced I never felt like I was really grounded in the characters, their powers, or their world before we ran headlong into a world-saving plot, and by the end of the book I still can't tell you anything about either boy except that Naoya is a wuss and Naoto is protective and sometimes a jerk. A very brief spoiler here... The story slammed into this book could easily have been drawn out to two or three volumes. If they wanted to move ahead into whatever comes next that quickly, I would rather they had referred back to this story as a flashback than actually cover it. And actually, I'm a lot more interested in their time at the facility than anything else that happened so far. This is a Del Rey Manga release, so the translation is solid and flows well. There are translation notes, and a word from the original creator (George Iida) and the mangaka (You Higuri) at the beginning and end, respectively. All in all, I'm not very impressed with NHG. But if you like your boys pretty and emo, and your stories simple and dramatic, you could probably kill a half-hour with this book...I just recommend borrowing it from a friend or the library. There are better ways to spend your cash. (Might I suggest a couple of other Del Rey supernatural dramas, like xxxHOLiC or Ghost Hunt ?)

10 Unsung, Legally Streamable Halloween Anime It's Halloween, everyone, and you know what that means: an plethora of lists of the top-ten monster/horror/cosplay/fantasy-themed anime for you to marathon this evening should you so choose. But there are a LOT of anime that you can watch that suits the theme of Halloween that won't get mentioned, so rather than create the standard list, full of the same old shows we all know like Hellsing and Vampire Hunter D , or worse, shows we can't legally watch yet, like Soul Eater and Kuroshitsuji , I thought I'd put together a list of ten lesser-known shows-- because they're less popular, or older --that you can legally stream this very evening on your computer, so you don't have to leave the house at all if you don't want.    You may notice the lack of shows from The Anime Network; this is because they mostly only have 1-3 episodes available for free of any given series, and I was aiming more for shows you could stream through in large chunks, if not in their entirety. That said, there's a LOT of awesome shows to sample there, including the strong first episode of recent acquisition Ghost Hound , or the first four episodes of Petshop of Horrors, so you should definitely take a look .   Enjoy! 1. Galaxy Express 999 Available at FUNimation's video site and Crunchyroll . The story revolves around a young man who goes on an epic journey on the Galaxy Railways with a mysterious woman after the death of his mother. 2. Astro Boy Available at Hulu (dubbed). This 2003 anime adaptation of the Tezuka manga was created for the 40th anniversary of the original. Some fans weren't into the English dub of this particular show, but this is still easier to get your hands on than the original! 3. Eve no Jikan Available at Crunchyroll . Eve no Jikan (or Time of Eve) is set in a world not unlike Astro Boy's, in which humans and robots live side-by-side, but not in equality. The events take place at a bar in this world which refuses to discriminate between the two, allowing robots to hide their status rings and other perks. Here, robots begin to show signs of wanting to earn independence, but interact regularly with humans as well. 4. Ghost Hunt Available at Hulu (subbed) and FUNimation's site (dubbed and subbed). I've profiled this series before, but if you want a really well-done collection of ghost stories with a touch of ongoing personal story arc along the background, it would be hard to find something as strong as the recent anime adaptation of the Ghost Hunt light novels. 5. Spice and Wolf Available at FUNimation's video site . Okay, so it's not so terribly unsung, but how many Halloween lists will it pop up on? Nonetheless the show has a remarkably peaceful "fall" feel to it, as well as fantasy elements and being a period piece (more or less), so it would make a great relaxing Halloween watch. 6. Gankutsuou Available at Crunchyroll . Whether you love or despise what Gonzo does in its literary adaptations such as this-- based on the Count of Monte Cristo, but set in space! Kinda! --Gankutsuou is one of the most visually striking anime I've seen in the last few years. Besides which, unlike the original novel of revenge, the focus here is on the relationship between the Count and the son of his target of vengeance. 7. Baccano! Available at FUNimation's video site . Another fantasy period piece, but about as different from Spice and Wolf as possible-- in fact, "Baccano!' literally means noise or ruckus (in Italian). The story revolves around a group of (neary) immortal alchemists fighting for their lives-- and the elixir that made them immortal in the first place. 8. Black Jack Available at Crunchyroll . A lot of people don't realize that Black Jack didn't get made into a TV anime until 2004-- and you can watch 28 of the ~60 episodes at Crunchyroll right now. As you should know, the series revolves around a rogue doctor who performs high-risk surgeries without the approval of the Medical Board, who object to his exorbitantly high fees as well as the dangerous surgeries he performs. It's less supernatural, but believe me, there's plenty of horrors... 9. Shikabane Hime: Aka Available at Hulu . A living corpse-- a woman who died, but lives on, not quite in the traditional Zombie way --must destroy 108 other living corpses in order to gain entry into heaven in this gruesome horror series. 10. Natsume Yuujinchou Available at Crunchyroll . I keep hearing excellent things about this series, which revolves around a guy who's trying to set right all the horrible things his grandmother did to demons, so I think this one's on MY watch list for tonight!
