The noitaminA anime timeslot began showing on FujiTV in April 2005. It was set up with the intention of expanding late-night anime viewership beyond the typical young male demographic to include girls and women, and young adults. "noitaminA" is "Animation" spelled backwards.By all accounts, noitaminA has been a fair success. In its late Thursday evening timeslot (varying between 11pm and 1am), shows such as Honey & Clover, Nodame Cantabile, and Hataraki Man had audiences that were apparently more balanced between males and females, and ratings have been good to great for almost all shows.One episode of Nodame Cantabile had a rating over 6% of the audience, putting it well within the top ten, which is dominated by "family" (i.e., kids') shows and young-shounen shows.Here is a list of all 17 noitaminA shows, by average TV rating, taken from a post on 2channel. But Nodame Cantabile was a huge hit, too. The somewhat educational Moyashimon ("Tales of Agriculture") did very well, as did the wonderful semi-realistic comedy/drama Hataraki Man.Two of this year's shows, Eden of the East and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, did pretty well, coming in just under 4% of the audience. That surprises and pleases me, since I loved both shows.The most recent show, Trapeze (Kuchuu Buranko) may be the most unusual and experimental, and so far has the lowest ratings. It seems to be stabilizing its viewership just under the 3% mark.Honey & Clover, the first show in the series, did okay, but not as well as later shows. Maybe it would have done better if it had been shown more recently, after people got used to watching anime in this timeslot. So, this is a tentative new feature, by which I mean it'll happen whenever I think of something that I keep expecting to see licensed that hasn't been (as opposed to one of my regular features that I do weekly...usually).Basically, I'm going to spotlight a series that hasn't been licensed-- but should definitely be considered for it. And this entry, of course, is for the series Toshokan Sensou, or Library Wars.Title: Toshokan Sensou (Library Wars)Origins: Based on a four-volume light novel series of the same name by Hiro Arikawa, which were published from '06 to '07 by MediaWorks.Media: One light novel series, two manga series, one anime.    Light Novels: Toshokan Sensou. Published by MediaWorks.    Manga: Toshokan Sensou Love & War. Shoujo, runs in LaLa anthology (Hakusensha). Started September 2007, ongoing.    Manga: Toshokan Sensou Spitfire!. Shounen, runs in Dengeki Daioh anthology (MediaWorks). Started November 2007, ongoing.    Anime: Toshokan Sensou. Produced by Production I.G and aired from April to June 2008.Status: All media currently unlicensed in North America-- or outside of Japan at all, as far as I can tell.Summary: Toshokan Sensou is sort of an alternate history series, set in a Japan where the government has split into two factions: the Media Cleansing Committee, which allows the government to censor any media it deems harmful, and the libraries, who are willing to defend their materials through force if necessary. The series follows one particular woman, Iku Kasahara, who becomes a new recruit for the Kantou Library and also the first female member of the elite Library Task Force. A strong mix of comedy, drama, romance, and action, it's an excellent all-around series.About the License: So, that would most likely be held by MediaWorks, who published the original novel series. MediaWorks has published everything from Kino no Tabi to Spice and Wolf to Shakugan no Shana to Azumanga Daioh-- in other words, their stuff has been licensed all across the board by American companies. So it's hard to say who would pick up what, if anything.For example, VIZ has licensed several series that ran in LaLa (Ouran, Vampire Knight), so they might have a shot at Love & War. On the other hand, TOKYOPOP snatched up Kaichou wa Maid-sama and Jyu Oh Sei from them as well.Yen Press just picked up Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&!, which were both Dengeki Daioh titles, so maybe they could get Spitfire!. Then again, Daioh published the Tsukihime manga, which DrMaster acquired; Bandai is publishing the Gurren Lagann manga that runs there (and if they got Toshokan Sensou's anime they might publish its manga as well). TOKYOPOP acquired Daioh's Strawberry Marshmallow, and VIZ has its Shakugan no Shana. Even Seven Seas got the Daioh-serialized Kashimashi. You get the idea.Basically, it's impossible to say who might have the best shot at licensing any of the Toshokan Sensou media, and for all we know there might be a bidding war going on in the background. But it's a solid anime series that I'd love to spend some money on-- and I'd really like to read the novels. I'd say the odds there would be in favor of Yen, or perhaps I should say Hachette: if the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya novels sell decently in the mainstream, they'd have quite a lot to offer to a licensor. And I could actually imagine Toshokan Sensou being assigned to middle or high school students to talk about censorship. Hm...What say you? Jyu Oh SeiA lot of people have a distressing amount of free time right now: perhaps you live in Texas and your school has been cancelled due to swine flu, or maybe you've gotten laid off, or perhaps you're George W. Bush (...low blow?). Well, FUNimation and ADV have each announced new access to various titles to fill those empty hours of your lives, and I'm betting plenty of them are in the “I've been meaning to check that out” category for you guys, so be sure you read on!FUNi's Rojas literally points out the three shows they'll be adding to the FUNimation Channel. The first is Jyu Oh Sei, which is a rather unique anime based on a slightly older manga (which TOKYOPOP is printing), a shoujo sci-fi mystery drama in which twin boys find themselves on a planet for criminals and they must battle its leaders and become the Jyu Oh Sei if they want to go home. Next up is Aquarion, set in a vaguely Matrix-esque world (sans the Matrix itself), where humans are being harvested for their energy by creatures known as Shadow Angels, and only a trio of advanced fighter planes that can combine to become Aquarion.Ouran High School Host ClubAnd finally, a major favorite of mine: Ouran High School Host Club, in which Haruhi, a student of meager family, attends Ouran High, the school for the fabulously wealthy, on a scholarship. Trying to find a quiet place to study on the first day of school, Haruhi accidentally stumbles instead on the school's own Host Club and knocks over an expensive vase, falling into massive debt for the club. Haruhi becomes the club's gopher briefly, until they realize the scholarship student's potential as a host and make Haruhi over to be a sweet prince like themselves. Oh, and eventually they realize that Haruhi's a girl, too. Excellent stuff. Yes, it's got a lot of fanservice for girls, but it's got a lot more of that, including some of the best comedy of its season (the only competition really being The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, IMO).ARIAADV's Anime Network has teamed up with Nozomi Entertainment to stream three of its titles, starting with “atmosphere” anime ARIA, which tells the tale of young girls in the future training to become gondoliers on the planet of Neo Venizia. Light yuri high school tale Maria Watches Over Us is next; this appears to be the first seasn only of the adventures of Yumi Fukuzawa and her attendance at an all-girls Catholic high school.And finally, the original Toward the Terra movie of 1980, which is definitely on MY “haven't checked out but should” list. Based on the classic manga by Keiko Takemiya, this sci-fi tale takes place in a world where some of humanity has developed into Mu, people with telepathic and other paranormal abilities (not in broad varieties like X-Men, mind), and the normal humans fear and try to destroy them.Excellent stuff all around, and I bet most of you haven't already seen all six of these shows (I haven't)-- so I don't want to hear any whining that there's nothing to watch!...Unless you don't have access to the FUNimation Channel or Anime Network On Demand.

These may be difficult times in the anime industry, but you couldn't tell it from the number of anime being produced. Forty-eight titles come out this spring -- series and OVAs -- about the same number as last spring.But quantity doesn't necessarily imply quality. Nothing here seems like an instant classic. But every season has its surprises, and there may be something wonderful lurking in the list.Some shows that seem promising to me:Eden of the East (Higashi no Eden) -- politico-romantic thriller. The OP, believe it or not, is by Oasis: Falling Down, a track that came out last year.The preview is beautiful, with Umino Chika characters (versions of Morita and Hagu) against photorealistic backgrounds, and a very nice mood.Add the fact that the cast includes young singer/seiyuu Hayami Saori in her first real starring role and I am right there for this one. With just over two weeks to go until the new season starts, it's time to think about what's coming. Tastes differ, but the shows I myself am most looking forward to are:the mysterious moe romances ef - a tale of melodies and Clannad - After Story the absurd comedy Hyakko (with Orikasa Fumiko and Hirano Aya) the bishoujo comedy Kannagi (directed by Yamakan, the original director of Lucky Star) the shoujo romantic comedy-dramas Nodame Cantabile Paris Chapter and Skip Beat! the space opera Tytania (directed by the director of Legend of the Galactic Heroes) Vampire Knight - Guilty, which I guess is romantic shoujo horror.However, many other shows look interesting, too: shounen romantic monster-fighting in Ga-rei Zero and Yozakura Quartet; a well-animated female buddy show set in Brazil in Michiko to Hatchin; shounen supernatural mystery in both Kurozuka (directed by the director of Death Note) and Chaos:HEAd (adapted by the writer of Death Note); two real mecha shows in Gundam00 II and Kurogane no Linebarrels; and others. MOON PHASE has the first promotional image of the recently announced To Aru Majutsu no Index series. It's going to be animated by J.C.Staff and directed by Nishikiori Hiroshi (he's also directed Azumanga Daioh, Jyu Oh Sei, and The Melody of Oblivion). presepe has a post-recording interview with Akamatsu Ken and the voice actresses of the Negima anime in advance of the Shiroki Tsubasa Ala Alba OVA due out in August. Even if you can't read Japanese, you can marvel at the picture of Akamatsu Ken surrounded by his harem the voice actresses. Neo Angelique is going to continue under the name Neo Angelique Abyss Second Ag starting in July.
