The characters aside from the voice issues were really well done. Sure there were your annoying parts to some of the characters but those were pretty small. Yay, it's 2010! ^^ Whether you kicked off the new year with a jump-start on one of your resolutions, a hangover, a hatsumode, or all three, I hope everybody's having a good start to the new year/decade. Here's a list of my top 10 yuri anime of 2009, followed by a list of my top 10 yuri anime of the past decade. My Top 10 of 2009: 10) A tie between Ikki Tousen (Funi's re-release of the first season and Media Blasters' release of Dragon Destiny) and Nanoha (Funi's release)- Once I gave Ikki Tousen a shot, it turned out to be stupid fun (with yuri!). Nanoha season 1 (that's all that I've watched up to this point) deserves mention for how much it improved by the end, with some cute subtext to boot. 9) Saki (streaming on Crunchyroll)- What began as a boring high school comedy/drama quickly developed into a fun tournament-style title with a likeable, yuri-riffic cast of characters. My top couples are still Momo x Yumi, Nodoka x Saki, and Hisa x...uhh, Mako or Mihoko (whichever ^^;;). 8) Maria-sama ga Miteru Season 3 (RightStuf's release): I absolutely love Marimite. And RightStuf, for licensing it. :-) 7) Blue Drop- A very good, low-key sci-fi romantic drama that I didn't expect to see released in English on DVD. Go, go Sentai! 6) CANAAN: I know, I know. Besides Liang, the only yuri in this series is subtext/wishful thinking. But what yummy subtext it is. Plus, yay for having another good seinen action series revolving around an primarily female, non-school aged cast that doesn't moe-fy or "Queen's Blade"-out its characters. 5) Maria-sama ga Miteru Season 4- The fourth, possibly (imo, probably) final season for one of my all-time favorite shows. More wonderful subtext (and friendships) between wonderful characters in a wonderful story. 4) To Aru Kagaku no Railgun: For simply being a fun sci-fi action title with a canon yuri lead. (Although Saten's skirt-flipping ways and Uiharu's fascination with Tokiwadai have both pinged my gaydar as well.) 3) El Cazador de la Bruja (Funi's English DVD release): The final, most yuriful series in Bee Train's "girls-with-guns" trilogy, finally available in English! XD Yay, Nadie x Ellis! 2) Sasameki Koto (streaming on Crunchyroll): It didn't have the budget or, frankly, the same level of direction as Aoi Hana's adaptation, but it was a joy to see Sumi, Ushio, and the rest of the Joshibu finally animated, and it was simply a fun show. Plus, it was cool to not only see this series stream on AE, but also get picked up by other lesbian media sites. 1) Aoi Hana (streaming on Crunchyroll): Surprise. ^^; From the opening episode, I loved this series. The characters, the story, the art, the music, everything, pulled together by Kenichi Kasai's brilliant direction, with Ikuhara Kunihiko's beautiful OP as the cherry on top. I couldn't have been happier with this adaptation- aside from the fact that it needs a second season (like so many other shows on this list). Plus, it was very cool to see a yuri anime streamed on Afterellen for the first time. Honorable mention goes to Shin Koihime Musou (for the sheer number of yuri characters) and Kanamemo (for Yume and Yuuki, even if Haruka...well, everybody who reads this blog already knows how I feel about Haruka). My Top 10 of the Past Decade: 10) Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito: This is a crappy title with a crappy, tear-your-heart-out-and-stomp-on-it ending (although I've heard that the manga and game both have yuri-friendly endings). But it was the earliest yuri-centric title to air during the past decade. For helping to get the yuri ball rolling, Yamibou deserves a spot here. (Plus, I like Hazuki. She deserves a better series.) 9) Magical Girl Lyrical  Nanoha- I've only seen the first season, but since I know that StrikerS features Nanoha and Fate living together as adults, sharing a bed (when they could easily sleep in separate beds), and raising a kid who calls them both "mama", I'm listing it. 8) Mai-Hime- For being a popular action title that gave rise to a popular yuri couple, among numerous other potential pairs. It spawned even more yuri in its spin-off, Mai-Otome, and in the two OVAs that branched from Mai-Otome. Not to mention Mai-Hime Destiny, Mao-Hime (I think that's what it's called...I haven't really bothered with reading it), and the upcoming Mai-Hime EXA. (I'm trying to forget the first Mai-Hime manga.) 7) Strawberry Panic- For further cementing Marimite's influence and the pervasive "all-girls' school" trope in yuri, for better or for worse. Plus, it's a fun show. 6) Simoun: An absolutely excellent fantasy title from beginning to end that any anime fan would do well to try. Plus, the plot is wrapped up very satisfyingly (but not too neatly or happily) within its 26(!) episode span. 5) Noir: Subtext only but worth listing for its influence on the subtext-rich "girl-with-guns" subgenre, including Madlax, El Cazador, and (probably) CANAAN, among other titles. 5) Sasameki Koto- Just an enjoyable yuri-centric title that gently pokes fun at (and at times, subverts) yuri tropes and stars a likeable cast. Mega-points for not taking place at an all-girls' school (and for pointing out that Ushio tried her darndest to get into one), and continuing the trend of featuring characters who aren't simply "in love with this particular, exceptional person who happens to be a girl." 3) Kannazuki no Miko- First anime title centered around a canon yuri couple with a happy ending. (At least, I see it as a happy ending.) I'll admit my bias- even though I'm not fond of the angsty moping that makes up a sizeable chunk of this series anymore, this was the first title that I recognized as "yuri", and I was head-over-heels in love with it for quite a while. Plus, thanks to the enduring popularity of Chimeko (and Kaishaku's perennial fondness for them), we can likely expect a new yuri action anime- an adaptation of Kaishaku's Zettai Shoujo Seiiki Amnesian- within the next few years. :-) 2) Aoi Hana- Simultaneously the best and most realistic title centered around a canon yuri protagonist in the past decade. 1) Maria-sama ga Miteru: Because no other yuri title that aired from 2000 through 2009 has been as influential or as heavily-referenced as Marimite. And that's it. ^^

I've talked a lot on this blog about how amazing Simoun is, and I've also talked about how the Region 1 DVDs are some of the most worthwhile purchases you can make. Aside from great package art, they have all 26 episodes on just five singles with a full retail price of 18 bucks apiece. All of the DVDs feature cast interviews and games, and several of the DVDs feature a commentary video with the director, Junji Nishimura, and character designer/animation supervisor Asako Nishida, wherein a lot of behind-the-scenes information and bonus facts are revealed that dramatically enhance the experience. In the comments of my last Simoun-related post, remm noted how he wouldn't be able to get the DVDs where he lives, so I figured, what the hell, I'll do the world a favor and transcribe the commentaries! Plus it is great for referential use.

Simoun is one of the most recent anime we'll be talking about here, having aired in 2006 in Japan and been released between November 07 and 08 here in the states by Media Blasters. In my opinion, and in the opinion of many of the people who've seen it, Simoun deserves to be called one of the greatest anime of our decade. Let's check it out!

Darker than Black's second season, Ryuusei no Gemini ("meteor twins") is off to a good start, with intrigue, excellent backgrounds and animation, well-choreographed action, interesting characters, and a mix of star seiyuus, workmanlike seiyuus, and some little-known but interesting voices.Click here or on the image to go to the full table, which gives pics and info for sixteen voice actors in this show:Hei is played by Kiuchi Hidenobu, who became one of my favorite male voices with his role as Ren in NANA. He was also Dr. Tenma in Monster, and showed his versatility by doing an amazing job as Izumida, Ryouko's long-suffering sidekick in Ryouko's Case Files.Suou, amazingly, is played by Hanazawa Kana, who has the moe-est voice in anime, but uses a young but non-moe voice here. She is only 20 and keeps proving that she has the talent to grow.I hope we see more of Shion, since the voice goddess Kuwashima Houko (Shuurei in Saiunkoku) is her VA. Saiga Mitsuki, Mizuki Nana, Honda Takako -- there are some big names here. But there are also a couple of intriguing young seiyuu: the multi-talented actress/singer Ishikawa Yui plays Tanya, and complete unknown Moritani Satomi plays Elena.And we have two seiyuu who really make their living by dubbing foreign movies in Japanese. Honda Takako is the voice of Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, and Hilary Swank. Hori Katsunosuke has dubbed the movie voices of Michael Caine, Alain Delon, Kurt Russell, and Harrison Ford.The large number of lesser-known seiyuus made this a time-consuming page to create. I know few people pay as much attention to these pages as I do: I use them through each season, to keep the characters straight and learn more about the seiyuus.I have made quite a few of these pages over the past three or four years. The blogosphere is almost united in dismissing this show as boring and awful. The blogosphere is wrong, wrong, wrong.Actually, what I should say is that this show hits my sense of humor dead on, even if it misses most other people's.The show parodies itself parodying other shows. Within a few seconds of it opening, it has smashed the fourth wall to smithereens, and the characters slip in and out of levels of self-reference for 22 minutes of verbal and visual fun, almost entirely set in the student council room.Carrying this light burden are five lovely, strange, good-hearted characters: the four bishoujo elected members of the student council -- petanko moe, bishoujo moe, protective elder sister tsundere, cool tsundere -- and the one token male, who is there because he scored highest on exams. Good work for a sidekick-type character whose consciousness is entirely immersed in ero-games.The cast is four-fifths unknowns. The guy is played by Kondou Takashi (Train in Black Cat). For all the others, this is either their first major role or their first role, period. I like them all here, and expect to see more of most of them. At least two of them trained at well-known seiyuu schools, one has acted on stage, and one has hosted a TV show.Here is a characters/seiyuus page with pics of the four main characters and their seiyuus, as well as info about each seiyuu, and links to more. Click image to go to full page:Sample jokes: they start by saying how surprised they are this manga got an anime, that a drama CD would have been more than sufficient for a show that all takes place in one room. They debate what to call the show: one suggestion is Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, in order to guarantee an audience. This is a Kadokawa property, and most (all?) of the references are to other Kadokawa properties.Each time the moe little chairman stamps papers with her hanko (stamp), the male character says petanko ("flatchest"). She goes weeping to the secretary, burying herself in the secretary's ample chest, the size of which makes her feel even worse. As they are checking and approving items for each club, they approve castanets for the Light Music club (Kei-On Bu).The guy comes on to the secretary, whose response shows she hasn't even been listening. He says cool characters become passionate in the end. She replies, with hooded eyes: "Just try it." When the chairman gives a speech about what the club should do, all the others pay no attention at all, reading, playing games, etc. The guy's running joke is that the council is his harem. No-one agrees. In the middle of the chairman's speech, he interrupts her with a confession. He keeps coming on to each girl in turn, and being rejected in amusing (to me) ways. The moe-est member of the group turns out to be such an expert at Monster Hunter that she updates the walk-through wiki -- in a self-defeating way.The show is from a series of novels that has recently spawned a manga version, and that has sold upwards of 200,000 volumes. The director is Satou Takuya, who directed Ichigo Mashimaro. The writer who adapted the original is the well-known Hanada Jukki, who did Rozen Maiden and sola. I think the comic direction is excellent, with just the right sort of bent timing and expressions. Animation is by Studio Deen, a fact which sends many critics into long rants against the studio which made my favorite anime of all time, Simoun, and another of my favorites, Marimite.If any of this seems even remotely promising to you, give it a go. But don't say I didn't warn you that most people (both overseas and in Japan) seem to hate the show. Fools.note: The only other blogger I've seen say they like this show is Moogy.

There are more new shows this fall than in any season over the past few years. But I'm not sure the quality -- or at least the appeal to my taste -- will be that high. I don't see any shows I expect to be as good as the great shows of this past summer season, such as Aoi Hana and Bakemonogatari. But I'm ready to be surprised. (click pics to enlarge)We'll certainly have a lot of shows to choose from. But a growing number are OVA episodes or pre-released OPs being used to sell a manga volume, or advertise a future series. I'm not sure what the overall trend is in total production or total profit.I'll give complete details of pretty well all the new shows: staff, cast, dates, times, pics, sub groups, and links to more info in English and Japanese, as well as to the shows' AnimeSuki forums, which have more info and discussion. But first, here are some shows I am looking forward to:Sasameki Koto is a yuri school drama. The manga isn't as subtle and deep as Aoi Hana, but the show stars one of my favorite seiyuus: Takagaki Ayahi.Sora no Otoshimono is a shounen fantasy about a guy who gets a buxom, all-powerful angel as his servant. Ecchi comedy is not everyone's cup of tea, but this stars Hayami Saori, the most beautiful voice in anime, as well as Takagaki Ayahi, and is directed by the director of Bamboo Blade and Kigurumikku.Kimi ni Todoke was voted the top shoujo manga of 2008. I enjoy the manga, and I'm eager to see what Production I.G. can do with it. It stars Noto Mamiko -- the second-most beautiful voice in anime.Winter Sonata may have been the most successful Asian romantic TV drama ever. Now we get a chance to see a Korean animated version, voiced by the original actors.White Album now resumes, giving us the second half of the slowly evolving story of an aspiring idol's romantic and professional life. With Mizuki Nana and Hirano Aya.Miracle Train is the most bizarre show of the season: a comedy in which stations on a Tokyo subway line are personified as bishounen. What makes this so attractive is the fact that it will be directed by Kasai Kenichi, who did a masterful job with Aoi Hana.Darker than Black 2 continues the hard-boiled sci-fi mystery/adventure whose first season I enjoyed. Directed by Okamura Tensai (Wolf's Rain), and starring Kiuchi Hidenobu (Ren in NANA).Koishigure is not so much an anime as an actress reading romance stories over illustrations, but the format and the quality of the stories get my attention.Aoi Bungaku gives us another interesting format: four classic modern Japanese novels animated in three episodes each, with top character designers and artists involved.Tegami Bachi is a charming little fantasy about a girl (played by Sawashiro Miyuki) who is a letter-carrier in a mediaevalesque fantasy world.To is a two-episode OVA based on stories from a famous space-fiction manga and directed by the man who produced Appleseed and directed Vexille.Kuuchuu Buranko is the new offering from the makers of Mononoke, and is based on an award-winning novel about visits of neurotics to their even more neurotic therapist.Denpateki na Kanojo hasn't received much attention, but I loved the first ep of this two-episode OVA starring Hirohashi Ryou, about a weird girl, the boy she adores, and a series of murders.I am also looking forward to the one-episode OVA Aki-Sora, although I hesitate to admit to enjoying the almost-hentai manga, which gets closer to incest than even kissxsis.Yamakan's second music video of the season, Black Rock Shooter pilot edition, is also on my list. His Tonari no 801-chan is growing on me.I'm also looking forward to the big, serious China-Japan co-production of a 52-episode version of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.This may not be my season, but it may well be a season for shounen fans. We have the extremely popular shounen comedy adventure manga Fairy Tail being animated, with Hirano Aya in a leading role, along with Kugimiya Rie and Kakihara Tetsuya (Simon in Gurren-Lagann).And Inuyasha gets a new season, with all the original cast returning.The fighting fantasy ero-game 11eyes is also being animated, starring Ono Daisuke and Gotou Mai, directed by the director of Someday's Dreamers 1 and Zegapain, and written by the writer of Hell Girl.Tatakau Shisho - The Book of Bantorra is another shounen fantasy, based around fighting librarians who guard books that are people's souls. I wasn't able to finish listing every single anime and manga containing adult yuri characters today (which is a very good thing, if I look at it optimistically...without thinking about how I'm making soup from stones from some of these series), so I decided to create two new separate lists- one for anime containing adult yuri characters and one for manga containing adult yuri characters. The anime list is the one I'm posting today and the new manga list will go up tomorrow. Again, please feel free to suggest any series I've missed. ^^ I also decided to add pictures of the series listed to make the list more aesthetically appealing.Aoi Hana:There haven't been any adult yuri characters so far, but if a second season gets green-lit, keep an eye out for a cute- albeit minor- adult yuri couple that appears beginning in volume 3 of the manga. ^^Streaming legally on Crunchyroll.Blue Drop: A sci-fi drama about a girl named Mari who meets and falls in love with a female alien named Hagino, who belongs to an all-female alien race (called the Arume) that's planning to take over Earth. Asuka and a younger model named Kasumi both have a thing for Jun, as well as two other women who appear in the show. (And Jun reciprocates towards one of them. ^^)Currently OOP on R1 DVD, but not difficult to find.Kanamemo:An insipid slice-of-life series about a girl who works to deliver newspapers, along with four young women, two of whom are dating, and another one of whom is a "lolicon."Streaming legally on Crunchyroll.Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora: Does anybody care about Kuu, Kyoshiro, and Setsuna? Yes? ...No? *crickets chirping* Our KnM cameo couple, Kaon and Himiko, seem to still technically be students, in the loosest sense of the term (they don't do anything student-like), but Mika, the EPL headmistress of the school/eeevil organization that they belong to who tries (emphasis on "tries" ^^) to win Kaon for herself is an adult.Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS:The third season of the popular otaku-targeted magical girl franchise, featuring the 19 year-old protagonists, Nanoha and Fate, working at the Time and Space Administration Bureau while raising a daughter. (I certainly couldn't do that... ^^;) I want to watch this season since it sounds chock full of yuri subtext (the kind that I like seeing), but I still have to get through the first two seasons... I've only watched through episode 3 of the first season so far.Currently available in English via fansubs- only the first two seasons have been released on R1 DVD- and quite frankly (based on what I've seen- I know that the first episodes of season 1 are known for being pretty soporific), I can understand why they didn't sell very well.Mai-Otome (a.k.a. My-Otome):The sci-fi alternate world spin-off of Mai-Hime, featuring several canon (and heavily implied) yuri characters, both teenage and adult- my favorite couple being Headmistress Natsuki and Shizuru, followed by Chie and Aoi! ^_^ (And yes, I'm biased. MH and MO are among my favorite series, despite their numerous flaws.)Available on DVD and easy to find.Maria-sama ga Miteru (a.k.a. Maria Watches Over Us):You all should know this one. An all-girl's Catholic school...a student council named after roses...an elaborate sempai-kouhai system that that uses French jargon.... Season 1 briefly includes an elderly woman who wrote an autobiographical novel of lesbian love from when she was a teenager, and the girl who she was involved with works in the present day as one of the faculty at Lillian Girls' Academy. And of course, we have Sei, Eriko, and Youko reappearing occasionally after their graduation from seasons 2-4. ^^Available on DVD and easy to find.Mnemosyne (a.k.a. Rin -Daughters of Mnemosyne-):A sci-fi/horror mystery about Rin, a private detective who cannot die, her similarly immortal secretary Mimi, and a host of other women who have become immortal as a result of absorbing spores from the tree of Yggdrasil (don't ask). Rin goes about her days solving increasingly bizarre mysteries that lead her back to the source of the immortals. (Granted, the men who absorb the spores don't become immortal, they... you'll see if you watch it. ^^;) I'm torn on this series- I really like Rin, and I like most of the other characters (even some of the villains), but the graphic content is a major problem for me (even though I know that's the point of this series). Rin and Mimi sort of seem to have a relationship going on, and Rin has two female informants who demand sex as payment for their information.Will soon be available on R1 DVD.Noir/Madlax/El Cazador de la Bruja:Noir was the series that made "girls with guns" synonymous with "yuri subtext" for many fans, and the other two series in Bee Train's "girls with guns" trilogy followed suit- El Cazador even provided some text for us loyal fans. ^^ All three series are good- and all three have yuri-ish women- but I'd have to pick El Cazador as my favorite- I like its fun, "let's not take ourselves too seriously" atmosphere, although I also like Noir and Madlax's darker, more brooding atmospheres.Noir and Madlax are available on DVD and easy to find, and El Cazador is due out on R1 DVD this fall.Plica-chan:A movie (composed of multiple smaller segments) based on Sae Amemiya's 4-koma Plica-chan manga; I haven't seen the movie yet, but the manga that the movie's based on is meant to present a realistic take on lesbian life in Japan from the point-of-view of an office worker named Plica, her girlfriend Mari, and a few other characters- less happy-go-lucky in tone than Rica'tte Kanji!?, and more pointed and acerbic in its humor than Honey & Honey, but entertaining nevertheless.Available on R2 DVD with English subs at the Love Piece Club website (nsfw, ships internationally). (Thanks goes to Erin for suggesting this one!)Re: Cutey Honey OAV: Gainax's visually trippy, immensely entertaining re-imagining of Go Nagai's classic Cutey Honey franchise (this is definitely my favorite version so far ^^). Honey has the same basic backstory, as a bubbly, outgoing android created by Professor Kisaragi to replace his dead daughter, who swears vengeance against Sister Jill, the leader of an evil organization (of course :) ) known as Panther Claw, for killing him. Unlike the original Cutey Honey and Cutey Honey Flash, in this version, Honey's an OL who befriends the tough-as-nails, hyper-competent gun-toting Inspector Natsuko ("Nacchan", who isn't this cool in her previous incarnations :) ). Nacchan is initially put off by Honey's easygoing personality (and the collateral damage that results from her fights with Panther Claw), but by the end of the OAV enough yuri subtext piles up between them to sink a cruise ship.Read or Die (OAV and TV series):Another action/mystery, but unlike the Bee Train series, the ladies in R.O.D. mostly wield paper instead of guns. :) The OAV and TV series follow "Paper Masters" (people who have the ability to use paper in preternatural ways- like slicing through objects) who work for the British Library, which serves as an intelligence agency. The setting of R.O.D. is semi-realistic, its chief fantasy element being that the British Empire still holds sway throughout the world and is struggling to maintain its power. This obviously causes conflict for our heroes. There's some nice subtext between Yomiko, a.k.a. "The Paper", and Nancy, another woman with super-abilities, in the OAV. (Is it wrong of me that I really like Evil Nancy?) In the TV series, the yuri subtext shifts more towards Yomiko and her author friend Nenene, as well as Anita, the youngest Paper Master, and her classmate Hisa (Hisa's crush on Anita is definitely canon, btw).The OAV is in print, but the TV series is currently OOP on R1 DVD (but not difficult to find).Simoun: A brilliant, cerebral sci-fi/fantasy war drama, with strong religious and gender identity themes. Not all of the characters are adults (technically not until they choose their true genders, in their society), but nearly all of them are by the end. This series really deserves more hype than what it's gotten.
