Darker than Black's second season, Ryuusei no Gemini ("meteor twins") is off to a good start, with intrigue, excellent backgrounds and animation, well-choreographed action, interesting characters, and a mix of star seiyuus, workmanlike seiyuus, and some little-known but interesting voices.Click here or on the image to go to the full table, which gives pics and info for sixteen voice actors in this show:Hei is played by Kiuchi Hidenobu, who became one of my favorite male voices with his role as Ren in NANA. He was also Dr. Tenma in Monster, and showed his versatility by doing an amazing job as Izumida, Ryouko's long-suffering sidekick in Ryouko's Case Files.Suou, amazingly, is played by Hanazawa Kana, who has the moe-est voice in anime, but uses a young but non-moe voice here. She is only 20 and keeps proving that she has the talent to grow.I hope we see more of Shion, since the voice goddess Kuwashima Houko (Shuurei in Saiunkoku) is her VA. Saiga Mitsuki, Mizuki Nana, Honda Takako -- there are some big names here. But there are also a couple of intriguing young seiyuu: the multi-talented actress/singer Ishikawa Yui plays Tanya, and complete unknown Moritani Satomi plays Elena.And we have two seiyuu who really make their living by dubbing foreign movies in Japanese. Honda Takako is the voice of Charlize Theron, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, and Hilary Swank. Hori Katsunosuke has dubbed the movie voices of Michael Caine, Alain Delon, Kurt Russell, and Harrison Ford.The large number of lesser-known seiyuus made this a time-consuming page to create. I know few people pay as much attention to these pages as I do: I use them through each season, to keep the characters straight and learn more about the seiyuus.I have made quite a few of these pages over the past three or four years. Takagaki Ayahi's trained voice has finally burst the shackles and displayed itself in full flight.Her CD of three CANAAN insert songs "China Kibun de High Tension!" sung as Nene, came out today.In the song "Life", she sings clearly and accurately, in a high register that still does not prevent her from giving the song real dynamics and musical expression. And a couple of times she soars.For me, "Life" -- and the other songs on the CD -- lift her instantly to a high rank among seiyuu singers.In addition to her seiyuu work, Ayahi majored in operatic singing at a Tokyo music college. After the last recording, I just sat there in the studio for a long time, unable to lose those feelings."What scenes would you pick as the best? "There are so many. I can't choose.... Well, if I was forced to, maybe the scene in episode one when Ein and Zwei first look at each other honestly. I thought that was such a beautiful beginning. And the final episode was wonderful, too."What interesting or amusing things happened during recording? "Jokes like 'What kind of show is this?' were flying around. Especially during the school scenes, the atmosphere in the studio was quite amazing. To touch on so many things in one anime was a very enjoyable experience. And Chiba Isshin, who played 'Master,' was a real mood-maker. When we were tense, he could lift the mood with a joke. After the final recording, the director opened a bottle of champagne in the studio lobby, and we all had a toast. That's the first time I've ever seen that. I really thought Director Mashimo's stylish direction was wonderful."Do you have a message for the fans? "The direction, the psychology...every scene is a great one. Even now that we've finished, thoughts of Elen and Reiji keep coming up in my daily life. It's like a great whirlpool...there is beauty and meaning in every way of life.That's what I get from watching this show. I hope you can get something important to you from it, too...."According to her blog, Ayahi just got back from two days in Toyama, the mountainous western region she fell in love with when she was working on true tears. The company that animated that show, PA Works, has its head office there.Her manager told her she had Saturday and Sunday free, for once, so she flew there from Tokyo and stayed over one night. It was her first-ever holiday trip alone. She says she got lots of help from people she met, and especially from the people at PA Works. She particularly enjoyed a long soak in the bath, looking up at the evening hills. And she ate and ate and ate.One new Ayahi show has just started, and another is about to start. In Sora no Otoshimono, she plays a hilariously cold and sharp-tongued student council president. In the yuri comedy-drama Sasameki Koto, which starts Wednesday, she is the star: a tall karate expert who is in love with her friend, while her friend prefers cutesy girls only.

Takagaki Ayahi 高垣彩陽 is 4' 11" of talent and hard work. And over the past two years, she has become one of the better seiyuu actresses around.She brings alive the laconic young killer Ein in Requiem for the Phantom. She made Nina Antalk the emotional centre of Chrome-Shelled Regios. Before that, she helped create an amazing romantic innocent with Noe in true tears.And the role that first got my attention was the mature Otome in Da Capo 2 SS. Especially her powerful emotional expressiveness near the end of the series. Ayahi can be a bit melodramatic, but the emotion works. The CD will be released 21 October.The songs are called "祈り†" (oriri 'prayer') and "Justice".Ayahi is just completing a great run as Ein in Requiem for the Phantom. This fall, she will star as Sumika in Sasameki Koto, and will play an important role in Sora no Otoshimono, both starting in October.KOKIA is the well-known Japanese singer-songwriter who wrote and performed the outstanding OP1 and ED2 of Phantom. To me, her voice and material have aspects of celtic, country, and show-tunes: Loreena McKennit, Shania Twain, and Celine Dion.Takagaki Ayahi's first big role was Noe in true tears. She has a trained singing voice, having graduated from a Tokyo music college last year in vocal music. I thought her character songs as Ein from Phantom were excellent, and she does a nice job as a back-up singer on the Koukaku no Regios ED.
