It's two months since Kanako transferred to Ame-no-Kisaki, but she still hasn't found the perfect girl-on-girl relationship that she'd been hoping for. While running late for class one morning, though, she stumbles upon the mysterious Girls Dormitory #1, in whose grounds grows a tree that, legend has it, holds the keys to true love. Could this be her chance to form her much-dreamed-of harem of female flesh? Or will the small detail that it's on the boundary with the neighbouring boys' school ruin her dreams..? Given I'm only 2 episodes into the first season of Maria Holic, it seems a bit strange to be starting on the second already - but then this isn't exactly the sort of series with an ongoing plot that doesn't forgive you missing anything. No, it's just the slapstick adventures of "lipstick lesbian" Kanako and the girls she'd like to have in her own personal harem of lithe teenage flesh, and the cross-dressing bastard of a boy who stands between her and girl-on-girl heaven. And that's really all you need to know - if you like the sound of that, this series will work for you; if not, it won't. THE GOOD: Genuinely funny, fast-movie, visually impressive (it's SHAFT, so that should be expected). THE BAD: Slapstick humour doesn't work for everyone, and poking fun at closet lesbians is hardly politically correct. It's as shallow as hell, but great fun nonetheless. More, please! Maria Holic Alive is being simulcast by The Anime Network (US only).
